Mom, philosophically: “Whenever my lilies start to grow, the deer eat them.  But they keep coming back, every year.  Maybe it’s okay for them…”

Me, scientifically: “No, because then they can’t reproduce.”

Mom, jokingly: “They don’t reproduce.”

Me, incredulously: “What?  Do they have flowers?”

Mom, affirmatively: “Yes.”

Me, logically: “Then they reproduce.  That’s what the flowers are for.”

Mom, amusedly: “Oh.  I thought they were just for me to enjoy.”

Me, wryly: “Yeah, that’s a typical human reaction to everything the natural world has to offer.”
